Foça is a picturesque fishing village which is steeped in history and has a charming and peaceful atmosphere along with a great beach, sailing and windsurfing. Foça is a district, as well as the central town of the Foça District in Turkey's İzmir Province. The town of Foça is situated at about 69 kilometers or 43 miles north by northwest of the İzmir city center. Foça was an ancient Ionian Greek city called Phocaea which was mentioned in Homers writings. The district also has a township with its own municipality named Yenifoça - meaning "the new Foça" which is also along the shore and at a distance of 20 kilometers or 12 miles from Foça proper. For this reason, Foça itself is locally often called as Eskifoça - meaning "the old Foça". An ancient city called Phocaea is located between the two modern Foças.
Additionally, Yenifoça which was taken over by the Genoese in 1275 was the more active of the two Foças during the Middle Ages, due principally to the region's rich alum reserves - with this Genoese lease over them having been preserved well into the Ottoman Era. Eskifoça stretches along two bays; a larger one named Büyükdeniz - "the greater sea" and a smaller cove within that large one, named Küçükdeniz - "the smaller sea" where the medieval castle is also located. Many parts of the district are under strict environmental protection due to the value of the flora and fauna which dramatically enhances the beauty of the small bays and coves, especially between Foça and Yenifoça. An excellent way to get to know the district would be by taking one of the boat tours regularly organized at center of town. Because of the protective measures, new construction is not permitted in many parts of the district and Foça is determined to preserve its unique characteristic which is composed principally of old houses.
A construction project for a 300-boat capacity marina in Foça has started and upon completion the town is expected to open to still more active international tourism. Foça is the site of one of three marine protected areas established in Turkey for the preservation of the Mediterranean Monk Seal, a heavily endangered species of sea mammals.
The Turkish Navy maintains at Foça the home base of its two special operations units - the Su Altı Savunma (SAS) and the Su Altı Taarruz.
