Bodrum
The Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, in the Bodrum Castle of The Knights of St.John, sits adjacent to the harbor. Throughout its history Bodrum Castle has served as a military base, public bath and a prison. Currently it is a museum featuring an underwater archaeological exhibit, the mummy of Ada and the oldest shipwreck in the world. Within you can also visit the Mausoleum of King Mausolos, built by Queen Artemis in the fourth century BC. The Knights of St.John built this castle from stones that once were part of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: The Mausoleum of Halicarnasus. Bodrum is the name of the Turkish holiday resort that sits on the site of the ancient city of Halicarnassus - where the famous Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was located. Built somewhere after 353 BC it was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Unfortunately, the ancient monument was destroyed by earthquakes during the Middle Ages. According to Herodotus, born in 484 BC in Halikarnassus, the city was founded by the Dorians. Then the Megarans enlarged the city in 650 BC and changed its name to Halicarnassus, and later Persians ruled the city from B.C. 386. After the Roman and Byzantium rule, the Ottoman Empire conquered the city in 1522, during the reign of Suleyman, The Magnificent. The city adopted its current name, Bodrum, after the Turkish Republic was declared in the 1920's. Today Bodrum can reached by sea from Kos and Rhodes which are both Greek Islands. Daily ferry or hydrofoil services to Kos are available daily and the ferry from Rhodes to Bodrum runs scheduled service during the summer season. Ticket offices are located at the marina. During season you can also take ferrys to Kalymnos and Simi in Greece. Large tour bus companies operate bus services to Bodrum from all major cities in Turkey. Travel time from Istanbul to Bodrum is about 13 hours; from Izmir to Bodrum about 4 hours; and from Ankara to Bodrum about 10 hours. Scheduled and charter flights from other Turkish cities and from Europe connect with Bodrum at the Bodrum-Milas Airport about 35 kilometers outside of the city. Bodrum is a prime destination for affluent Turkish and younger foreign visitors due to its pristine beauty and its nightlife.
